TOMMY DENANDER (Radioactive)

1.- Hi Tommy, it´s been a while since we last spoke for Undercover Fanz, however things have been far from quiet for you.
A lot of projects and the new Radiactive album.

- I don´t like to be not busy ... life´s too short to sit around. Lately I´ve done new albums with Prisoner, Rainmaker, Sayit, Bruce Gaitsch, Jessa Slatter, Martin Viotti, Lions Share, Eclipse and more, what better way to spend life than that.

2.- What artist influence you and your music?

- The list is long-
Guitar: Ace Frehley, Carlos Santana, Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, Steve Lukather, Michael Landau, Dann Huff, Michael Thompson, Bruce Gaitsch, Steve Stevens, Eddie Van Halen, Gary Moore, Paul Jackson Jr...
Keyboards: David Foster, David Paich, Vince DiCola, David Garfield, Greg Phillinganes...
Bass: Abe Laboriel, John Patitucci, Nathan East, Mike Porcaro, Neil Stubenhaus...
Drums: Jeff Porcaro, Vinnie Colaiuta, Carlos Vega, Alex Van Halen, John Jr Robinson, Marcus Liliequist...
Singers: All Toto singers, Geir Ronning, Steve Perry, David Coverdale, Paul Stanley, Celine Dion, Bill Champlin...
Producers/songwriters: David Foster, Toto, Quincy Jones, Mutt Lange, Dann Huff...
Bands: Van Halen, Toto, Kiss, Steely Dan, Chicago, Giant, Journey, T Ride, Pages/Mr Mister, Judas Priest, Whitesnake, Karizma...

3.- There is a distinct variation in styles on the different bands you play. It´s this deliberate?

- Absolutely. I´ve been a session player for many years now and that´s what I like about it, to be able and fit in to any style and situation without losing your feel or personality. Since I do some many albums I think it´s also important to try and make every project as unique as possible. It´s still me though... I think people can tell these days even if  it´s more laid back for Sayit or more flashy for Rainmaker etc...

4.- After your many years in the business, how do you feel about the Radiactive album?

- It´s an album that I was afraid wouldn´t be released ever! It´s been such a strange journey in ten years... from heaven to hell several times but now when it´s done I´m so proud of it...
I´m very proud to have made something that no one else can do , it´s like climbing  Mount Everest on your hands or something. Because Jeff Porcaro is not here anymore, bless his soul, and he was a big part of why some of the top names wanted to be part of it. And to get David Foster to play piano on it took me 3 years of getting tothe point of making it happen cause he´s the biggest guy in the music world, you can´t just pick up a phone and say " Hey Dave play on this please". I think some people will look at this album at first like any other AOR release but with time it´s gonna stand out as the archivement it is, not because of the songs cause that´s a matter of taste if you like them or not, but the work itself... and I´m very proud of that!
I have a very humble view of my whole life and the all people I meet so don´t take it as big ego... It´s just an amazing thing to have completed such a huge task.

5.- Would you consider playing with Toto members again or is that all in the past?

- I´ll work with ant of them in a second, in fact Mike Porcaro recently played on a couple of songs that I wrote with Ricky Delin for his solo album and Bobby Kimball and I have several ideas for the future. Toto as a group I don´t care much about anymore though, I think they should quit now before it becomes sort of a joke. They proved with Mindfields what a great band they still can be at time and to see Bobby back and kicking ass was great... but it´s so far from their old class that I think it´s a shame.
Maybe I´m full of it cause the new and younger fans have nothing to compare to so there might  be a future for them... I just think that so many of the fans who grew up with the band feel the same way... quit and make new exciting projects on your own.

6.- Moving onto the other bands you play, what are your personal thoughts on the current albums? Rainmaker, Prisoner and new Sayit...

- We recently released the new Prisoner album called "II" and the reviews have been very mixed, most magazines don´t seem to like it mainly cause of the production but the fans for the most part are thrilled so I don´t know. We had planned to make the album with live drums and so on but due to circumstances beyond control we made a bad decision to record it rather quick with a machine instead, I still like the album and think some of our best work is on it but again... matter of opinion.
As for Rainmaker I´m writing with Geir right now and we have some 6-7 songs going. We´re gonna get a cool cast of stars to play on it and I´m very excited about this album. I´m hungry to make this the best Hard Rock album of my life, it´ll be released early next year.
The new Sayit CD will be done in a few days and it´ll be out in september. Sayit is such a great friend and an amazing guitar player in his own right. He filled in for me at the Prisoner show at ZRock in Manchester and totally blew people away. Many people still think that this is a project called Say it... but it´s his name. The album include many big names like David Hungate (Toto), Kee Marcello (Europe), Jim Jidhed (Alien), Michael Thompson (MTB Band), Bruce Gaitsch (Richard Marx), Geir (Prisoner), Mats Olausson (Y. Malmsteen) and more. It´s more WestCoast than anything else I do but it´s still rocking this new CD.

7.- Of your albums which is your favourite?

- I can´t really pick but... Radiactive for the size of it I guess... again the archivement!.

8.- Do you have any plans to do live shows?

- Not this year but there´s talk about shows in Europe next year with both Rainmaker and Prisoner. I´d love to get out and meet all the fans, I know the other guys had a great time in England with Prisoner and the fans were amazing. We´re still in awe that we have fans.

9.- What next for Tommy Denander? I hear about a DVD

- A lot as always, right now finish Sayit and Rainmaker and then I have several cool projects for the fall like a new solo (guitar) album, another duet album with Bruce Gaitsch and so on. And the DVD of course, me and Gerhard Malmberg are working on it right now in the very early stages. It´s gonna be a very nice documentary of how Radiactive was made with lots of cool video clips from the recordings and tons of bonus stuff... you don´t wanna miss this. I hope we can have it ready by oc/nov.

10.- Thank you very much Tommy and keep the flame alive.

- Thanks to you for all your support. Keep up the good work and best wishes to all.
